ED 800 Concepts of Educational Inquiry

Fall 2012

Instructor: Dr. Steven Weiland

 

This course provided the foundational and theoretical aspects of the study of education. I was able to acquire knowledge of various philosophies that have been developed when discussing the nature of education and who has the ability to learn. This course allowed me to understand methods of inquiry and strengthen believes that education goes beyond formal schooling.

 

 

Summer 2013

Instructor: Dr. Steven Weiland

 

This course broke down how individuals follow career trajectories. This course was insightful in that it stressed that there is no particular pattern in the development or a career and various avenues for reaching objectives. I have acquired an understanding of how to guide individuals within the growth of their personal careers.

Instructor: Dr. William Arnold

 

This course has been especially beneficial in that it taught the development process from proposal, planning, execution and evaluation of putting together an event. The practical application of concepts has provided me the opportunity to be more organized and understand formal concepts of event planning and evaluation.

 

 

Fall 2013

Instructor: Dr. Muhammad Khalifa

 

This course had the most significant impact on my thought process. Being that I am a product of a minority community I felt that the information allowed me to understand my experience and to better understand what the communities I work with are facing. I now understand challenges faced in the interaction between the community and those providing them services and methods to facilitate the process for both parties.

 

 

EAD 830 Urban Ed: Racial Achieve Gap

Spring 2013

Instructor: Dr. Christopher Dunbar

 

The racial achievement gap is a prevelent topic within the communities that I serve. This course allowed me to understand that the problem is multifaceted and the solution to the issue would require comprehensive reform and the transformation of thought amongst traditional educators. I now have the best practices tools to evaluate how schools are perpetuating and tackling the racial achievement gap.

 

 

EAD 850 Issues and Strategies in Multicultural Education

Spring 2013

Instructor: Dr. Riyad Shahjahan

 

Education in multicultural communities have greater challenges in that much of the curriculum is not reflective of the community. This course allowed me to understand the steps toward adapting educational settings to the communities being served. The information acquired from this course has informed how to integrate the community into the discussion of learning to maximize potential.

 

 

TE 823 Learning Communities and Equity

Summer 2013

Instructor: Dr. Kyle Greenwalt

 

This course provided an overview of various subsets of the population and how learning is shaped for them. It provided great foundation on the notion of priviledge and oppression and how we are placed within society according to our charateristics. This course also helped inform how to support communities that have been traditionally oppressed and disenfranchised. 

 

 

EAD 861 Adult Learners

Fall 2013

Instructor: Dr. William Arnold

 

This course discussed adult learners and what aspects of an individual would charaterize them as an "adult." Here I came to a greater understanding of individual development and that growth is not necessarily accompanied with age, but with experience. This information is beneficial in order to support adults as learners and adults supporting family members who are learners.

 

 

EAD 876 Budget and Finance in Higher Education

Spring 2014

Instructor: Dr. Brendan Cantwell

 

This course has provided the fundamentals of how higher education is financed and the entities involved in the policy discussion. It has given me a richer understanding on how policy, prestige and enrollments play a role in the ticket price and financial aid. This information is essential because it affects educational attainment for a variety subsets of the population.

 

 

ED 870 Capstone Seminar

Spring 2014

Instructor: Dr. Matthew Koehler

 

The course influenced the creation of this portfolio. It has me provided the avenue to develope a greater understanding of the knowledge I have gained throughout this graduate program. It also allowed me to learn more about website development and design.
